OUTINGS  and  EVENTS    2006/2007

During the year the Lamorbey & Sidcup Local History Society organise several day trips to a variety of places - some local, some in London and some in other parts of the country. From Sidcup it is an easy journey by train to London, or for longer journeys we hire a coach, usually leaving from Sidcup Station. All of our outings have an historical flavour, but offer more than just history!

Geffrye Museum   We visited the Geffrye Museum in December 2006, in order to see the Christmas Through the Ages exhibition. The Museum is housed in18th century almshouses which today are Grade I listed buildings. They were built in 1714 with a bequest from Sir Robert Geffrye, former Lord Mayor of London. The Museum depicts the quintessential style of English middle-class living rooms which at Christmas are decorated as they would have been in each different period. The exhibition was a 'walk through time' from the 17th century to the late 20th century.

The Local History Fair is held every year at Hall Place in Bexley. Local and Family History Societies, the Local Studies Centre and relevant businesses from across the borough contribute to a stimulating and interesting day. The theme chosen for this year's fair was Childhood and our Society chose to make our display around Scouting as it was the centenary this year. Many of our members contributed artifacts, memorabilia, films and photos. The stand aroused considerable interest from visitors.

Chatham Dockyard  On 9th April 2007, the Easter Monday Bank Holiday Philip Wilson drove a small party of us to Chatham Dockyard where he was showing his vintage coach in the Steam and Transport Show. The journey to Chatham was extremely comfortable and we were able to read the history of the coach while we were travelling. Included in our tickets was free entry to all the displays at the Dockyard, so we visited the museum as well as watching the steam engines and vintage and classic cars.

Whitechapel Bell Foundry We visited the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in May. We were given a very informative and highly amusing guided tour by the Founder, Alan Hughes. This is the foundry which cast Big Ben and the Liberty Bell among others. We learned how to make a mould, cast and tune the bells.

Well Hall Pleasaunce Gardens, Eltham  John Kennett of the Eltham Society took a small group around the Gardens one evening in May. The gardens have a long history ranging from a medieval dwelling, then a Tudor home through to the 20th century when Edith Nesbitt had a home there. The gardens were created in the 1930s and have recently been renovated.

Borde Hill House and Gardens  The day chosen for our outing to Borde Hill turned out to be one of the best days of the summer. The house is lived in by the family and is only open for a few days each year, so we felt very privileged to have been able to book this visit. The house turned out to be fascinating and the gardens were at their best.

Tudor Day at Dunstable   This was the last visit of the summer and again we were very lucky with the weather - the only dry day in a wet week! The whole day was delightful - the appearance of 'King HenryVIII' and his progress around the various entertainments and displays; the stalls showing Tudor crafts and professions - herbalist, surgeon, candle maker etc; the arming of the knight and the ensuing display of sword fighting; the guided walk around the Priory Gardens; and the tea laid on for us at the pub.
